James D Sasser

JAMES D SASSER* (Lawrence Jameson) is thrilled to be making his Engeman debut. With a career spanning Broadway, Off-Broadway, and TV, James has been involved in the development of dozens of new works as a writer, actor, and producer for over 25 years. He made his Broadway debut as a singer for Riverdance and toured as Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar. His performance as Emile DeBecque recently garnered critical acclaim at Houston’s Theatre Under The Stars, as did his performance as Sweeney in Sweeney Todd for Four Corners MT. Other credits range from NY City Opera, CBS’s “The Good Fight” and “Madam Secretary”, to Forbidden Broadway (the NY SVU cast), and orgs including The O’Neill, Playwrights Horizons, New Dramatists, Goodspeed, and many more. As a writer, his television pilot “Forsyth County” has won multiple industry awards including the HollyShorts 2022 Festival Best TV Screenplay. He is the book writer for Looking For Christmas with country music legend Clint Black which premiered at The Old Globe. As one half of Burwell & Sasser, their musicals include Bottle Shock! (based on the movie, which will have its world premiere in July 2023 at CA Center for the Arts Escondido), the Midsummer Night’s Dream inspired Afro-Cuban hip-hop musical CUBAMOR, Le Comte Noir about Alexandre Dumas and the real Count of Monte Cristo, and the new operetta By Georges! A Day in the Life of the Legendary Chevalier for Lamplighters Music Theatre in SF. Other recognitions include being a 2019 Jonathan Larson Award Finalist, and an Uncharted Artist in Residence at Ars Nova. His voice can be heard in hundreds of commercials, audiobooks, and video games, where he’s usually a swashbuckling bodice ripper, drawling gunslinger, or most often British. As a producer with The 959 Group, they’ve won two Tony awards and were nominated for twelve with Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812, marking Josh Groban’s Broadway debut.
