South Pacific shines in Engeman’s summer lineup

Updated: Jun 16, 2025

There’s something magical about stepping into a local theater and feeling transported—through time, place and story. That’s exactly what the John W. Engeman Theater delivers with its vibrant new production of South Pacific, the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that first hit Broadway more than 70 years ago and won 17 Tony Awards. With Broadway veteran Hunter Foster at the helm as director, this local revival feels as fresh and relevant as ever.

Set on a remote island during World War II, South Pacific blends sweeping romance with social commentary, exploring themes of love, war and deeply ingrained prejudice. The show’s emotional weight is carried beautifully by its cast, particularly Taylor Aronson as Nellie Forbush. Aronson is a natural on stage, her vibrant voice and captivating presence breathing new life into the role. Watching her grapple with inner conflict as she falls in love in an unfamiliar world is both heartfelt and thought-provoking. Aronson’s playful performance of “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” delivered a fun, flirty and refreshing burst of energy amid the show’s heavier themes.

One of the most remarkable aspects of South Pacific is its courage in tackling racism and intolerance—topics that remain timely today. First staged in 1949, the show was groundbreaking in its candid look at the impact of prejudice on human connection. Foster’s direction honors that legacy, handling the subject matter with a delicate but unflinching touch. The result is a production that respects the original while inviting modern audiences to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how far we still have to go.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic without the music. From the swooning “Some Enchanted Evening” to the energetic “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” every number is delivered with Broadway-caliber precision. The Engeman Theater’s reputation for professional, high-quality productions is once again on full display, offering theatergoers a chance to experience a true gem right here in Northport.

South Pacific runs through June 29, with performances Wednesdays through Sundays. Tickets can be purchased at engemantheater.com or by calling 631-261-2900.
